SIRONE'S CONCORD (USA/Germany) Angel is the great love of the musical innovator Sirone, born in 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia. The co-founder of the Revolutionary Ensemble, he has shared bands and stages with Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor, among others. Angel is the double-bass, with whom Sirone undertakes his expeditions in sound. With his new ensemble, consisting of the American tenor saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff, the expressive violinist Ulli Bartel and the Berlin avant-garde drummer Maurice de Martin, Sirone follows in the spirit of American free jazz, as well as mixing in new elements from European free music, which reflect the make-up of this international quartet. Sirone - bass (USA) An excellent bass player and underrated composer, Sirone was co-founder of "The Revolutionary Ensemble" in the 1970's and has worked with many other bandleaders and groups. When he moved to New York in 1964, he quickly became one of the most respected bass players in the new jazz world. Together with pianist Dave Burell, he formed the "Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team". He was a member of the "Cecil Taylor Unit" for seven years in the 1970's. In the 1980's he was co-founder of the all-star band "Phalanx" with George Adams, Rashied Ali and James 'Blood' Ulmer. Sirone has recorded and performed with: Albert Ayler, Billy Bang, Gato Barbieri, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Denis Charles, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Andrew Cyrille, Walt Dickerson, Bill Dixon, Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Noah Howard, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Sheila Jordan, Jimmy Lyons, Bennie Maupin, Don Moye, Sunny Murray, James Newton, Enrico Rava, Dewey Redman, Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Shankar, Sonny Sharrock, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, Leon Thomas, Clifford Thornton and Carlos Ward. At the height of the free jazz movement, Sirone played with almost every major personality of this genre. Sirone has been living in Berlin for more than 10 years, where he realizes film- and theatre-based projects together with his wife, actress Veronika Nowag-Jones. He keeps performing with European improvisational musicians, handing over his unique know-how as well as important musical inspirations to his younger colleagues. Martin Kunzler writes in the "rororo Jazz Lexikon" (Germany's leading jazz encyclopedia): "The Wilbur Ware of avant-garde jazz who has been working with all free innovators, ..., is one of its most communicative players. With his huge sound he reflects influences from Jimmy Blanton to Charles Mingus and Reggie Workman, but he unearths ideas out of his own imagination above all." Ben Abarbanel-Wolff - tenor saxophone (USA) The tenor saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff, originally from Washington D.C., studied jazz and improvisation under Reggie Workman, Roscoe Mitchell, Mathew Shipp, Charles Gayle, Rob Brown and Ellery Eskelin. He recorded on the Knitting Factory label and worked intensively with master drummer and healer Milford Graves from 1999 to 2001. Berlin-based since 2001, he performs on a regularly with the "Berlin Jazz Composers Ensemble", as well as other formations out of Berlin's active young creative scene. As sideman and as leader he has toured Germany, Hungary, Korea, Poland, Romania, Serbia and the USA. Ulli Bartel - violin (Germany) Ulli Bartel is one of Europe's outstanding jazz violinists. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, finished first at the "European Jazz Violin Competition" and has achieved an excellent reputation as composer and director of music for theatre and film productions in Vienna, Munich and Berlin. He has peformed with George Cables, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Elgart, Allan Praskin and Jacky Terrasson. He is also involved in traditional Kurdish and Roma folk music, playing together with some of the major performers of these cultural styles. Maurice de Martin - drums (Germany) At the age of 21, de Martin released his debut recording with the German avant-garde band "Brother Virus" for the Enja label. He lived in New York City from 1991 to 1995, where he studied drums with Joey Baron and Denis Charles and composition with Giya Kancheli. He was also active on the downtown scene, and has performed with Tim Berne, Kermit Driscol, Bern Nix, Herb Robertson and Gary Thomas. With his own groups de Martin performed at numerous renowned festivals in Europe and the U.S. (e.g. the Knitting Factory's "What's Jazz", Leverkusen, Cologne Stadtgarten, Expo 2000 in Hannover, Nates). He participated in more than fifteen international CD productions (e.g. Enja, Intuition, PAO, Meta) and has also been working on music for theatre, dance and film.
